Ready for a musical journey that defies genres and crosses continents? On April 4th Sofia will witness a rare event – a concert by one of the most explosive bands in the world of Ethio-jazz: Ukandanz. The venue: Club Pave. Showtime: 8:00 PM sharp.
This concert is part of the iconic “Alarm Punk Jazz” series by Bulgarian National Radio and the platform for traditional and contemporary African music AfroVision. Wondering what Ukandanz is all about? Picture a whirlwind of traditional urban music from Addis Ababa fused with progressive rock, free jazz, and raw punk – all delivered with infectious energy and rhythm that promises an unforgettable sonic experience.
Led by the legendary vocalist Asnake Gebreyes, Ukandanz blends the unmistakable style of classic Ethiopian music with the fierce intensity of Lyon’s avant-garde scene. If you’ve attended concerts by PoiL, PoiL Ueda, or Ni, then you’ve already had a taste of this experimental spirit – no coincidence, as members of those bands were also part of Ukandanz in its early days.
The lineup includes bassist and arranger Damien Cluzel, virtuoso saxophonist Lionel Martin, keyboardist Fred Escoffier, and drummer Thomas Pieret – true musical craftsmen who turn every live performance into an electrifying explosion of sound.

Ukandanz already boasts five studio albums, and this month marks the release of their sixth – “Evil Plan” (2025). This latest record is a bold fusion where classic Ethiopian pop – inspired by icons like Tilahun Gessesse, Getatchew Kassa, and Muluken Melesse – meets the heavy riffs of… Black Sabbath! Yes, you read that right. Ever heard War Pigs in Amharic? If not – this is your chance!
Don’t miss it! April 4th. Club Pave. Ukandanz. A historic night for fans of daring, genre-defying, and utterly infectious music. Tickets are available through EpayGo and at EasyPay ticket counters.
This concert is supported by the “Africaia” Center for African Culture , Afro.Bg, and the Facebook group “Group Supporting the Airplay of More Ethiopian Music in Bulgaria”.
